Email is one of the most valuable channels a startup owns, unaffected by algorithm changes. Set up well, it turns new users into active customers, retains existing ones and drives repeat sales.

Building a list

  • Offer a subscription in exchange for something valuable: a guide, template or industry report.
  • Offer newsletter consent as an optional choice at sign-up.
  • Add event and webinar attendees (with consent).
  • Never use bought lists; they create legal risk and deliverability problems.

In Türkiye, commercial electronic messages require the recipient's prior consent and are subject to the Message Management System (İYS) rules. Include an easy unsubscribe link in every email, and meet notice duties when processing personal data; see our KVKK guide.

Welcome series

A 3–5 email series in the first days gets the highest engagement:

  1. Welcome and first step
  2. A use case showing core value
  3. A customer story or social proof
  4. Help and resources
  5. An invitation to upgrade or the next step

This series is part of onboarding.

Newsletter content

  • Value over sales: tips, guides, industry news
  • One main message and one clear action
  • Short, scannable, mobile-friendly design
  • A regular cadence (e.g. every two weeks)

Segmentation and automation

Group subscribers by interest, usage or customer stage. Behaviour-triggered emails (trial ending, a feature never used, no login for a while) convert well and reduce churn.

Deliverability

  • Set up domain authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC).
  • Remove inactive addresses regularly.
  • Avoid misleading subject lines.

Measurement

Track open, click, conversion and unsubscribe rates. Test subject lines with A/B tests.

Conclusion

Email grows with patience and is one of the highest-return channels over time. For other channels, see our low-budget marketing guide.
