DevOps and continuous delivery (CI/CD) for startups

The DevOps approach, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, infrastructure as code, monitoring and incident management, priorities for small teams.

Illustration of development and deployment steps flowing in an infinity loop

DevOps combines development and operations so changes reach production quickly, safely and repeatably. Even in a small team, the right automation makes it possible to ship safely many times a day instead of once a week.

Continuous integration (CI)

On every code change, automatically:

  • Code is built and linted.
  • Automated tests run.
  • Security and dependency scans run.

Errors are caught before changes merge.

Continuous delivery (CD)

Changes that pass tests are deployed automatically to staging, then to production with approval or automatically. Small, frequent releases are far less risky than big, rare ones.

Automated tests

  • Unit tests: correctness of small pieces of code
  • Integration tests: components working together
  • End-to-end tests: critical user flows (sign-up, payment)

Start with the most critical flows rather than testing everything. Tests also slow the build-up of technical debt.

Infrastructure as code

Define servers, databases and networking in version-controlled files, not by hand. Environments become repeatable, changes traceable and recovery fast.

Monitoring and alerts

  • Application errors, response times and resource usage
  • Meaningful alerts for user-facing problems (too many alerts hide the important ones)
  • A public status page

Incident management

  1. Detect the problem and assess impact.
  2. Restore service first (roll back if needed).
  3. Inform users and enterprise customers.
  4. Afterwards, run a blameless review and agree lasting fixes.

Security

Keep secrets in a secure vault, not in code, and limit deployment rights. See our cybersecurity guide. Enterprise customers ask about these practices in audits; see our ISO 27001 and SOC 2 guide.

Priorities for small teams

  1. Version control and code review
  2. Automated tests on every change
  3. One-command or automatic deployment
  4. Basic error monitoring and alerts
  5. Regular, tested backups

Conclusion

DevOps delivers speed and reliability together. Start with small steps; every automation frees the team to build product. For tooling choices, see our tech stack guide.
