Most startups fail not from poor execution but because they built something nobody needed. Idea validation reduces that risk at the cheapest stage. The goal is not to hear that the idea is "nice" but to see people willing to give time, data or money for it.

Clarify before validating

  • Who is the target customer?
  • What problem are you solving and how painful is it?
  • How does the customer solve it today?

8 methods

  1. Customer interviews: Talk to at least 10–15 target customers. Ask about the problem and current solution instead of pitching. See the customer interview guide.
  2. Competitor and alternative analysis: Review existing solutions and their reviews; see competitor analysis.
  3. Search and trend data: How often do people search for the problem?
  4. Landing page test: Build a simple page explaining the value proposition and collect sign-ups or pre-demand; see the landing page guide.
  5. Pre-sales: Take discounted pre-orders before the product is ready. Payment is the strongest proof of demand.
  6. Concierge MVP: Deliver the solution manually to first customers without automation.
  7. Prototype testing: Use a clickable design to see whether users understand the flow.
  8. Community observation: Track how often the same complaint repeats in relevant forums and groups.

How to interpret results

Set a success threshold before starting, for example "continue if at least 5 of 50 visitors sign up". This reduces the bias of seeing what you want to see.

Watch-outs

  • Friends and family are kind, so speak to the real target audience.
  • Saying "yes, I would use it" is not the same as paying.
  • Do not draw firm conclusions from small samples.

Next step

If validation is positive, build the smallest working product; see the MVP guide and for speed with AI the fast MVP guide.

Common mistakes

  • Jumping straight to development without validation
  • Listening only to confirming feedback
  • Never calculating market size; see the TAM SAM SOM guide
